The Town of Oliver is providing a letter of support to have February 1 acknowledged as Royal Canadian Mounted Police Day.

Council approved the resolution on Monday after reviewing a request from the RCMP Day Committee.

The committee, a group of citizens from Vernon, plans to present a petition to the BC Legislature to have the RCMP officially honoured on February 1 every year.

The day is to recognize police officers for what they give to their communities in terms of service, dedication and sacrifice.

It was on Feb. 1, 1920 that the Parliament of Canada created the RCMP, combining the Northwest Mounted Police (1873) and the Dominion Police (1868).

Manitoba is the only province in Canada to have Feb. 1 designated as RCMP Appreciation Day.
