An alleged arsonist who reportedly lit several fires near the Channel Parkway in Penticton on Sunday has been arrested and the RCMP is asking any witnesses to come forward.

On Sunday around 5:30 p.m., the Penticton RCMP and Fire Department were dispatched to a report of a fire having been lit near Eckhardt Ave and the Channel Parkway.

“The witness who called it in stated he observed a male lighting the fire,” said Cst. James Grandy. “The witness saw the male running south on the west side of the Channel Parkway trail.”

The man was described as wearing all black and carrying a bag.

Officers arriving observed another fire starting nearby, just south of the first one. While patrolling the area for the suspect, officers overheard a man cheering. Officers subsequently observed the man being pursued by a firefighter.

“After a short foot pursuit, officers arrested the suspect. Found on his person was a lighter and balled up paper towel,” said Grandy.

At this time, the suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues. The RCMP is requesting anyone who may have observed this incident to call the Penticton RCMP at 250-492-4300.
