A 27-year-old Oliver man died while working at a construction site in Osoyoos on January 10.
The BC Coroners Service identified the man as Sheldon Skolos. WorkSafeBC reported he was struck and killed by a load of oriented strand boards that slid from a forklift at The Cottages on Osoyoos Lake. This site is a recreational property development, and Skolos was employed by Stelkia Construction.
The Osoyoos RCMP were notified of the accident and assisted the BC Coroners Service in the investigation.
“Our members and ‘Victims Assistance’ had the unenviable job of notifying the next of kin of this tragedy,” said Sgt. Keven Schur.
Megan Johnston, communications officer for WorkSafeBC, said they will be looking at all of the workplace factors that may have contributed to this incident, such as worker training and supervision, condition and maintenance of equipment, training for use of equipment and for working in the area of mobile equipment.
“It’s important to understand what contributed to this tragedy so that we can prevent similar accidents from happening in the future,” Johnston said.
Robert Fisher of the BC Coroners Service confirmed that Skolos had been assisting a forklift operator in transporting construction materials when the incident occurred. Emergency personnel attended the scene and confirmed Skolos deceased.
“On behalf of the family, the BC Coroners Service asks that the media respect their privacy at this difficult time,” Fisher said.
The BC Coroners Service expresses its condolences to the family and friends of Skolos.
WorkSafeBC continues to investigate.
