A 75-year-old Penticton man died in a single-vehicle accident on Highway 97 north of Oliver on Thursday afternoon.
Sgt. Ryan McLeod from South Okanagan Traffic Services said the driver was travelling northbound in a Honda Pilot when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a rock face.
McLeod said the driver was deceased on scene and was the only occupant of the vehicle.
The incident occurred just before the sharp rock cut at Vaseux Lake at approximately 3:15 p.m. The Okanagan Falls Volunteer Fire Department secured the scene by closing the highway.
Traffic was backed up all the way to Sundial Road, forcing some motorists to take detours to Penticton. McLeod said the road was closed for a couple of hours.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation. McLeod encourages anyone who witnessed the incident to call 250-499-2250.
