A heartfelt plea to the parents, grandparents and neighbours of Oliver and surrounding area:

I grew up in Oliver three decades ago. Seven years ago, we returned to raise our own young kids, drawn by the small town atmosphere, the sunshine and the “farmy” lifestyle.

Oliver is the best place to raise kids; we truly wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. But here’s the thing: small towns like Oliver do have some drawbacks. The biggest we’ve found is that Oliver lacks certain important kid-friendly amenities, especially a safe, fun, usable skatepark.

Yes, Oliver does have a skatepark. But, if you’ve strolled around it lately, you’ll see it’s breaking down, rusting and mostly non-functional. Fixing it up is hugely needed but enormously expensive.

Then, just a week ago, a stroke of incredible luck: BCAA is willing to give our town $100,000 to fix up our skatepark, just like that. $100,000! Our town has already been selected as one of six finalists in the BCAA Play Here contest. To get our hands on the full $100,000 we just need to capture more online votes from the public than at least three of the other finalist communities. (1st, 2nd and 3rd positions each get $100,000; 4th gets $30,000; 5th gets $20,000; and 6th gets $10,000.)

How big a deal would this be to win?

As a parent of young kids, I can tell you that it would be huge. Right now, about five kids can kinda, sorta use the existing park at a time. With the planned renovations, 30+ kids of all ages could bike, scooter and skateboard around the park at a time, and have a safer, much more fun time doing it.

So here’s my ask: please vote every day. It’s the single easiest way you can very meaningfully support our town. Online voting is SO EASY: simply go to www.BCAAPlayHere.com and click ‘vote’ beside the Oliver Small Wheels Playground Project entry. Voting literally takes under 30 seconds and can be done from the comfort of your couch. Every adult resident of BC is entitled to up to four votes every single day until the contest closes June 23rd.

As of my writing on Sunday afternoon, we are currently sitting in third position. That said, fourth and fifth positions are breathing down our necks. Fourth was 500 votes behind us this morning; as of this afternoon they’re only 400 votes behind. Given that each person can vote four times a day and the contest is still open for 2 more weeks, fourth position would need just eight extra people voting per day to catch and surpass us. Eight people per day could make the difference between us capturing the full $100,000, or watching it slip out of our grasp.
