Firefighters are mopping up a grass fire off Black Sage Road south of Oliver this afternoon.

The Oliver Fire Department and BC Forestry crews were called to a brush fire near the landfill off Sibco Landfill Road where several hectares have been burned.

The cause is still being investigated.

Approximately 700 FortisBC customers were left without power due to the fire that taxed many firefighters because of the summer heat. Many had to be checked over by paramedics on scene.

FortisBC said they were asked by authorities to shut off the power.

“There is a fire endangering this section of Oliver that we have been asked to endure that there is no power to that section so that things can be addressed,” FortisBC said in a press release.

A helicopter was utilized to drop water on the fire that had the potential to grow into an uncontrolled beast. But fire crews managed to stay one step ahead of it.

No structures were impacted by the blaze.
