From Spain to Mexico and back to Canada, Vancouver’s Flamenco Rosario is embarking on a global voyage through dance and music.

On April 9, the dance company is making a stop at the Frank Venables Theatre and inviting the audience to tag along as they perform La Monarca.

Flamenco Rosario’s founders Rosario Ancer, the company’s artistic director and choreographer, and her husband, musical director and guitarist Victor Kolstee, moved to Vancouver in 1989 after a successful career in Spain.

They co-founded the Vancouver International Flamenco Festival along with their school, Centro Flamenco, and the Flamenco Rosario Arts Society.

Now they’re sharing their immigration story with the rest of the country.

La Monarca reflects on my continual motion, traveling between Mexico, where I was born, Spain, the Mecca of Flamenco, and Canada, where I immigrated more than 27 years ago,” Ancer said.

“Being a migrant between three homes reminded me of the recurring autumn pilgrimage of the monarch butterfly between Canada and Mexico.”

La Monarca, which translates to “the monarch,” focusses heavily on the metaphor of the monarch butterfly.

For Ancer, the butterfly’s “cycle of life and constant migration” relate to her immigration to Canada, along with her quest to share her knowledge of Flamenco with Canadian dancers.

But it also relates with Ancer’s personal creative revolution.

“The monarch butterfly’s sleepy transformation from its caterpillar stage is something akin to how I feel: emerging from an artistic metamorphosis and awakening to a renewed like of creative maturity.”

Although the work is personal for Ancer, she finds that it’s “emotionally resonant with meaning to anybody’s life.”

Ancer will be joined on stage by an eight-member company of dancers and musicians.
