School District 53 is offering a new course to students called First Peoples Art 10.

Last week the Education Committee threw its support behind the new course, plus the renewal of four other Grade 10 courses redesigned to fit the new curriculum.

“I wanna go back to school,” said trustee Myrna Coates after hearing about the courses.

First Peoples Art 10, developed by Lindsey McVicar from Southern Okanagan Secondary School, will run in conjunction with English First Peoples 10. This art course will explore topics related to culture, identity, values and world views.

Students will learn about the history of the Osoyoos Indian Band as well as other indigenous cultures throughout North America through a series of field trips and guest speakers.

Learning Strategies 10, developed by Cate Turner from Similkameen Secondary School, provides students with the opportunity to develop self-awareness of their own learning profile. The course will focus on time management, emotional well-being, goal setting and independence.

Equine Studies 10 has been developed by Steve Pozzobon and Glen Heinrichs from YouLearn. Students learn the basics of rider safety, horse psychology, disciplines, breeds and care and feeding.

Hockey Canada Skills Academy has been developed by John Seminoff from Osoyoos Secondary School.

The course offers student hockey players a training program that focuses on individualized skill development rather than professional calibre play. The other “goal” is to link athletics to academics.

Seminoff also developed Golf Academy 10 with Wayne Hachey. This course encourages students to explore new ways to develop physical and mental fitness in a fun manner.
