Special to the Chronicle
And that’s a wrap folks! Another Firehall Brewery Back Alley Concert Series under our belts. And it was a great season, with new bands, new wineries and cideries, and new faces in the crowd, along with the familiar faces of friends, family and associates like Dubh Glas Distillery and Vagabond Kitchen.
Last Saturday’s concert was “Floyd Meets Brown” meets Leila Neverland, a merger of two musical forces in the Kelowna music scene. Leila started off the night with a fun and engaging solo set, just her and her piano and ukulele. Then Floyd Meets Brown took the stage, and got funkalicious on us, getting us all in the groove for twilight dancing. Then for a grand finale, Leila joined them on the stage to rock out the rest of the night.
We were joined on Saturday by Summerland’s Dominion Cider Co, Oliver’s Maverick Estate Winery, Gallagher Lake’s Dubh Glas Distillery, and Station Street’s Vagabond Kitchen, bringing their tasty creations to compliment our beer, the music, and the art.
Saturday’s featured artist was Katherine MacNeill, who brought her phenomenal mixed-media artwork. From a distance, they look like beautiful paintings, but upon a closer look, you discover that she paints with transparent glue, glazing over paper and other materials that she finely cuts and fits into place. If you didn’t believe that’s what you were seeing, you could see it in the works, because she was at the concert doing a demonstration as well, cutting and pasting a scenic natural landscape right there on-site. All the more beauty to add to the beauty of the night. The afternoon wind blew away all the forest fire smoke, leaving us a beautiful sky to cheers under.
Thank you to everyone who came out this weekend, and to the other concert nights this summer. We appreciate the love and support we receive from the local folks who make it out to our grassroots concerts, helping to keep the arts alive and the town exciting and uniting! And thank you Volunteers for making it all possible!
That’s it for Back Alley Concerts this year, but we still have frequent smaller-scale concerts at the Firehall Brewery, like Shaun Rawlins & Tyler Bartfai on Sunday, Aug 26 at 2 p.m. (see our website or Facebook page: facebook.com/thefirehallbrewery).
Our beer also ends up at other concerts in the area, like the Rock’n’Roll Picnic at the Oliver Community Centre this Friday, Aug 17, the Roots & Fruits Expo also at the Community Centre the next day (Saturday, Aug 18), and the Ponderosa Arts and Music Festival in Rock Creek, B.C. this weekend (Aug 17-18).
