Concerted effort by RCMP and SAR brings missing woman home

The Oliver RCMP found a local woman who was reported missing after going for a walk near a section of irrigation canal on June. 25.

An injured woman was reunited with her husband recently thanks to the Oliver RCMP and Search and Rescue (SAR).

RCMP spokesman Cst. James Grandy reported that a man advised them that hisĀ 66-year-old wife had gone for a walk along the irrigation canal at 8:45 am on June 25 and had not returned home.

The canal, due to recent flooding, was very high with fast moving water.

Oliver RCMP Cst. Sinnett and Penticton Police Dog Services searched the area without success and called SAR for assistance. Members of SAR began a systematic grid search while Oliver RCMP contacted the RCMP dive team and the RCMP helicopter.

An officer with the Oliver RCMP was tasked with being an observer inside the RCMP helicopter while searching for the missing female.

“It was the late afternoon and a storm had gone through the area, dropping a large amount of rain in a short period,” Grandy said. “There was concern the female was being exposed to the weather elements while only wearing light clothing.”

At one point, Cst. Sinnett observed the female waving at him 300 yards from where she began walking, but she was on the other side of the canal.

“She described having been in the canal but was able to pull herself out onto the opposite bank,” Grandy said. “Because she was now wet, exhausted and had suffered some injuries to her legs, she was unable to walk.”

Grandy said the RCMP helicopter landed near the female and the police officer was able to assist the exhausted female into the helicopter. The female was then transported to a location where paramedics could assess the female and determine if she required further treatment at the hospital.

Grandy said the Oliver RCMP would like to thank SAR for its assistance.
