March 2, 1939 – October 25, 2019
On Friday October 25, 2019, Mr. Garth Kunz of Osoyoos BC, passed away at the age of 80.
Garth Kunz was born in Penticton, BC on March 2, 1939 to Eleanor and John Kunz.
Garth will be lovingly remembered by his wife Darlene of 53 years; daughter Lesley (Chris) Hanson; son Todd (Lisa) Kunz; grandchildren Sydney, Paige, Josh, and Mathew Hanson and Liam, Olivia and Jillian Kunz. Garth is also survived by sister Muriel Washington; brothers Brian (Lauretta) Kunz and Paul Kunz, and his many nieces and nephews.
Garth grew up in Osoyoos and made many fond memories with his child hood friends. He went on to work at BC Tel, returned to farm after his dad passed away in 1958 and he worked as a foreman at the packing house in Osoyoos. Garth married Darlene in May 1966 and soon after they bought Garth’s child hood farm from his mom. Garth was a passionate and hardworking farmer. He was always willing to learn and change with the times. He was heavily involved with the horticultural industry where he hosted tours, taught students and took part in innovative farming techniques. Garth went on various farm tours to Europe, South America and to the United States. Garth served as the president of the packing house for many years, was on many different boards (Sun Rype, BC Tree Fruits) and was always trying to advocate for farming in BC.
Garth joined the fire department in 1965 and spent over 50 years fighting fires for the town of Osoyoos. Garth loved the fire department and spent countless hours fighting fires, servicing trucks, training new members, attending fire practice and making lifelong friendships.
The most important thing in Garth’s life was his family. He was an amazing dad and Grandpa. He loved to play with his grandkids, woodwork in his shop and to spend time at his property in Westbridge. His shop was always open for anyone to stop in and he diligently met his friends for coffee every morning. Garth was a very kind and giving man who was always willing to help others out whenever needed. He will be so greatly missed. His memory will live on in our hearts forever. We would like to express our gratitude to Dr. De Vries and to the caring staff at Mariposa Gardens.
A funeral service for Garth will be held at 1:30 pm Monday November 4,2019 at the Osoyoos Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations gratefully accepted for the Alzheimer Society.
