UBCM convention crucial for Oliver this fall

The Town of Oliver wants to pull out all the stops at the Union of BC Municipalities convention in September.

The big issue – money for the Gallagher Lake irrigation canal fix.

And another thing,  Oliver is still waiting to receive the two additional police officers to help cover the correctional centre.

The UBCM convention in Whistler is the go-to place for municipal politicians with wish lists for their towns and cities.

“We need to go there loaded . . . we need to pull out the stops,” said Mayor Ron Hovanes at Council’s June 25 meeting.

The canal was damaged by a rock fall in 2016. It was temporarily fixed and is now awaiting a permanent fix by rerouting the canal along Highway 97, which is slated to cost approximately $10 million.

The Town of Oliver had a previous commitment from the provincial government for $5 million and has been pining for federal support, which hasn’t materialized yet.

“We need something solid from Ottawa,” Hovanes said, admitting he is a little frustrated with the government’s lack of commitment.

The mayor said he hopes to meet with Premier John Horgan and invite Osoyoos Indian Band Chief Clarence Louie as well.

Hovanes said the other important issue to be discussed is additional RCMP resources that are supposed to ease the burden that the correctional centre is having on the local detachment.

“We need to remind them (the province) that this is a provincial responsibility,” the mayor said.

Councillor Larry Schwartzenberger said they also hope to get an update on the legalization of marijuana, which is supposed to come into law on October 17.

  1. Good show Mayor Hovanes; I am now convinced that you and your staff are committed to bringing about change with respect to these two issues. Don’t take no for an answer.
Don’t forget, we have a Community Crime Watch Forum coming up on August 28th at 6:30 pm in the Community Center in Oliver.
