Lion’s Park will soon have a new closing time in an attempt to reduce visitors who use it for less than desirable activities.

On Monday, council approved a staff recommendation to set the closing time to 10 p.m. instead of “dusk.”

Currently, the Park Regulation Bylaw states that no person shall be in the park between dusk and 6 a.m., unless for an approved special event.

Corporate Officer Diane Vaykovich said the Lion’s Park Committee was previously established to improve the experience of park visitors. For example, outdoor sinks were installed, in addition to WiFi service.

As far as troublemakers go, “Oliver RCMP advise the farm workers are not the problem at the park, but local residents,” Vaykovich said.

She noted the committee has discussed challenges of closing the park to reduce visitors who utilize it for the consumption of alcohol and other undesirable activities.

“Oliver RCMP and bylaw enforcement note that it is difficult to move users along at dusk as the time is ambiguous (open to interpretation).”

As a result, there have been requests to have a specific closing time, Vaykovich said.
