Special to the Chronicle
This past weekend, the Oliver Tennis Club held its annual fall mixed doubles tournament.
Thirty-six players, friends and family attended. A delegation of canine tennis fans also watched the games.
Saturday morning a rain delay could not dampen the spirits of attendees as they were kept fueled by coffee, muffins, sandwiches, fruit and other tasty treats. Brooms to leaf blowers were deployed to push the water off the courts when the rain stopped.
By 1:30 p.m. the warriors prepared their armour – athletic tape, tension bandages, and sweat bands – and returned to their court battlefields. The colourful sportswear and yellow-green tennis balls stood out against the cloudy scenery. One visitor from out of town was pleased to take a dip in the Oliver Community Pool between matches.
On Saturday night, many tournament participants enjoyed a dinner at Nk’Mip Canyon Desert Golf Club.
Sunday brought perfect weather for tennis play – sunny skies and temperatures in the mid twenties. Competitors were quieter as they focused on their play, eyes on the prize – or perhaps they were just getting tired. Sunday also brought bagels, pizza and sushi to the courts.
Each participant received a random draw prize, including hand knit washcloths, gift certificates and cards, water bottles and wine.
The winners of the tournament were as follows:
A Division 1st place winners – Dawn Richards (Summerland) and Eric Hearle (Osoyoos)
A Division 2nd place winners – Dawna and Kees den Otter (Kelowna)
B Division 1st place winners – Janet Shaw and Len Bicknell (Oliver)
B Division 2nd place winners – Dian Lees (Oliver) and Paul Kinsman (Osoyoos)
C Division 1st place winners – Debbie Edwards (Oliver) and Norm Spicer (Shuswap)
C Division 2nd place winners – Darlene Homenchuck (Kelowna) and Gordon MacMichael (Oliver)
