Oliver business group looks forward to new signs

by Lyonel Doherty
This year will be a sign of the times for the Oliver Business Association (OBA).
Members met last week to discuss several issues. One included OBA’s previous draft to council regarding bylaw amendments that regulate sandwich board signs in town. The association wants to see consistent, professional looking signs that don’t impede pedestrians.
The other issue discussed was the anticipation of street corner signs guiding people to local businesses in the downtown core.
The meeting began with a review of the Christmas light-up event in December. There were suggestions on how to make it better for 2012.
We had many positive comments,” Veintimilla said, noting it was suggested the committee look into providing more activities for youth.
It was also agreed that the event should be held on a different night so it doesn’t conflict with Oliver’s “Midnight Madness” or the light-up event in Osoyoos.
In other news, OBA plans to send out a questionnaire to business owners to ask them what they would like to see the association focus on in 2012.
Veintimilla said OBA will once again take part in a fundraiser for Desert Sun Counselling and Resource Centre. Last year the event was a fashion show.
“We want to showcase what our local stores and businesses have to offer.”
Veintimilla said OBA hopes to recruit more members this year, noting that people are welcome to check out the monthly meetings.
The next meeting will be held in February and will include a special guest speaker.
