Young man sentenced to prison for arson
An 18-year-old Osoyoos man has four years in a jail cell to think about his actions that destroyed a thrift shop and a dollar store on May 1 last year.
A judge sentenced Phoenix Lonsdale in Penticton provincial court recently in a sentencing hearing.
The court heard how Lonsdale planned the arson in downtown Osoyoos, where the CIBC and a dental clinic were also damaged.
It was reported that Lonsdale volunteered at the Christian ministry thrift store and secretly lit a fire in the basement as part of an insurance scam that he instigated on his own. Lonsdale said he thought it would help the financially-strapped owners.
He later returned to the scene to watch firefighters battle the blaze.
