Young acknowledged that a high percentage of students have issues that interfere with their learning.
Under the “Children in Care” program, each student has been assigned a designated staff member to help monitor their academic progress. The program has result in improved attendance, better course completion rates, enhanced letter grades, and students staying in school longer.
The district has set various goals/targets in literacy, numeracy and completion rates. For example, under the BC Foundation Skills Assessment for reading in Grade 4, the target was 85 per cent. The result was 85 per cent (up from 80).
“This is hopefully the start of a good trend,” Young said.
The target for the English language arts 12 exam was 90. The result was 92. And the target for Grade 1-3 writing was 90 per cent, with the result being 90.5.
Under Grade 7 literacy (reading), the result was 80 per cent (up from 73 per cent).
In numeracy (math), the Grade 4 target was 80 per cent. The result was 87 per cent. And in Grade 7, the result was 77 per cent (up from 66).
