Council approves permit
Former Town council approved a development permit for a multi-family dwelling project on Park Drive (79th Street).
The application by Steve Carberry is for the construction of a two-storey duplex on a vacant lot at 6466 Park Drive. Both dwelling units are proposed to be 930 square feet in size and will include two upstairs bedrooms.
The Town’s Official Community Plan designates the future land use of the property as medium density residential.
Carberry is proposing to utilize existing shrubs and hedges to screen the parking from neighbouring properties. In addition, the owner is proposing to install grass as an amenity feature. The remainder of the lot is currently surrounded by chain link fencing.
Director of Development Services Stephanie Johnson said the proposal does not detract from or negatively impact the existing character of the neighbourhood.
Councillor Jack Bennest questioned the minimal security deposit of $781 for the installation of landscaping (prior to building permit approval). “That tells me not much landscaping will be done.”
Bennest also questioned if this duplex will be an appropriate fit in this “classy area of Oliver.”
Johnson noted the proposal will create a more affordable housing option for the community.
