Do you know someone that should be recognized for their contributions to the community of Oliver?
Nominations are now open for the Town of Oliver and Oliver Parks & Recreation’s 13th annual Spirit of Oliver Awards.
There are five categories open for nominations: youth, individual adult or couple, pioneer family, group and community builder.
The Awards started in 1950 with only one category – the Oliver Good Citizen Award – donated by the Junior Chamber of Commerce and won by Harold Wright.
In 1961 the Junior Chamber of Commerce ceased to exist and the award was reintroduced in 1966 by the Oliver Board of Trade, now known as the Oliver Chamber of Commerce.
In 1990 another category was introduced: the Pioneer Award, meant to recognize Oliver’s founding members.
In 2017, four awards were given out. Larry Larson won Individual Adult; Sue Morhun won the Heritage Award; Women of Oliver for Women was named Outstanding Community Group; and Ryan Encina took home the Youth Award.
The deadline for nominations for this year’s awards is March 29. Nomination packages are available online at www.oliver.ca/spirit-oliver or at Town Hall.
There will be a reception for nominees at the Venables Theatre Lobby on April 11 at 5:30 p.m., and the Spirit of Oliver Awards Breakfast will be at the Community Centre on April 20 from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m.
