(This letter pertains to safety in our community and the recent forum attended by local police and municipal officials at the Oliver Community Centre.)
Here are some excerpts from The Canadian Press this morning Saturday, June 23, 2018:
“OKOTOKS, Alta. – A courtroom erupted in cheers and applause Friday as all charges were dropped against a man accused of firing shots at suspected thieves on his rural property in southern Alberta.
The Crown withdrew charges that included aggravated assault and firearms offences against Edouard Maurice at a court appearance in Okotoks south of Calgary.”
“In March, the province announced $10 million in funding to hire more RCMP officers and support specialized crime reduction units in rural communities.
Defence lawyer Tonii Roulston said being able to defend property is important and often police are delayed in responding to rural calls.”
Quote out of the Chronicle:
“Residents urged to do their part to keep Oliver safe.”
Why us? We are paying our taxes partly to receive proper protection, not to receive a small part of the protection we really need.
I am starting to wonder why the residents of Oliver are made to believe by our Council, Mayor and Linda Larson that everything that can be done is being done…..Balderdash.
I am still calling for all involved in our politics to establish a plan and a time line for rectifying this protracted and completely unsatisfying situation. Stop the political double talk and get busy.
We will not be going quietly into the night.
Michael Guthrie, Oliver
