I Met a Boy Today

I met a boy today, the kind who smiles when he talks. He was a good kid, confident and courteous. He offered to let me move ahead in the Super Valu line-up, so I could chat with my friend on his other side. Instead, all three of us chatted about his riding across Canada with his dad. I asked about school (as he was clearly a teenager), and his being home-schooled made this trip possible.

I could hear an Australian twang and saw that he was buying them lunch, while his dad was getting the horse settled. They had just ridden over the mountain from Cawston. Zack was riding his mountain bike, and his dad, although riding, had walked quite s bit of the steep terrain to save the horse’s back.

Later, at home, I was surprised to see a cowboy approaching on foot. He was escorted by someone who would not allow them to sleep overnight on their property. Again I perceived the Australian accent and said, “ I think I just met your son at the grocery store.” True enough!

I said yes to his request of a place for his, his son, and his horse, overnight, as I could see his tiredness, and I sensed he was a good person as well as a great dad to that nice young boy, Zack.

In the short time they were here, he fixed a barn stall, fence rails and my bathroom tap. He could have just said thank you, and that would have been enough, but he paid me back tenfold.

The neighbours came over to give them guidance for the next day. They were heading up toward Baldy and across to Rock Creek. Joe Guy has ridden across Australia and the Southern United States and is now heading across Canada with Zack, going via the Canada Trail where possible. They were gone before I got up the next day.

We had talked the day before about trust and how it is in short supply nowadays. For myself, I felt privileged to be a small part of their adventure, and was glad cynicism has never taken root in me. I would have missed out.
