On February 2 Southern Okanagan Secondary student Jenna Bower travelled with the Vancouver based field hockey team, the Polar Bears to the Disney Field Hockey Showcase tournament in Florida. There for a week and a half, Bower competed among the best of the best in front of scouts from universities all over North America.

Her field hockey career began two years ago when she was in Grade 8. “All my friends were doing it, so I just thought I’d do it too. I just really like how the game works I guess,” she said, adding that she plays left forward, but also plays the other positions too.

While the SOSS field hockey team was in season, they would practice close to two hours a day, and usually have tournaments on the weekends. They finished third in provincials last year. Bower also played on the provincial BC white team, competing in a national tournament in August. Despite a grueling practice and game schedule, Bower didn’t miss a single chance to play.

“I’m one of the more focused ones, because I am from so far away, so that’s why I usually go because even if it’s only two hours, that’s training I wouldn’t normally get here,” she explained.

It was through her participation with the provincial team that she got noticed by the Polar Bears club, and she happily knows some other girls that were also on the provincial team.

With all of the pressure of such a high stakes competition, how is Bower feeling?  “It depends on what kind of tournament it is, but nationals are usually pretty high stress,” she said, “you don’t want to mess up, you want to do the best you can.”

When she’s not playing the game, Bower keeps fit by running on the treadmill. “You have to really keep your cardio up to be able to do the running,” she said, but other than that her fitness regime is normal. Like other teenage girls she likes to spend her free time with her friends and goes to the movies a lot.

Best of luck in the future for Bower; no doubt she will make her team, family and friends very proud.
