A hay fire on the back of a truck had Oliver firefighters scrambling this afternoon to prevent the spread of a grass fire on McKinney Road near Manuels Canyon Road.

A truck that was towing mounds of hay appeared to catch fire, which spread to brush on the side of the road. When firefighters arrived, the hay was fully engulfed and spot fires were being created by flying embers.

Firefighters literally chased the blaze and managed to extinguish the spot fires before they were out of control. The department is currently in the mop-up stage.

It is unknown how the fire started. No report of injuries.
